The success of Earth Hour shows many of us in Hong Kong care about climate change but it is only the beginning of Low Carbon Living! To support your efforts in reducing personal carbon emissions, WWF Climateers launches the “Low Carbon Living Appliances Guide” to help you choose climate-friendly electrical and electronic appliances.
In Hong Kong, over 60% of greenhouse gases are emitted from electricity generation and the demand for electricity in the residential sector has increased 34% between 1990 and 2005. This means we all have a part to play in reducing Hong Kong’s overall carbon footprint, and the most straight forward solution is to reduce our electricity consumption.
Applying the advice of this Guide when deciding to buy new appliances or replace obsolete appliances is a big step in the right direction. For example, when you shift to use a “best performer” energy efficient air conditioner highlighted in the Guide from an average-performing one, you can save up to HK$300 and some 200 kg carbon dioxide a year.
The Guide is the first of its kind low carbon guide in Hong Kong, offering handy information on carbon emissions and energy efficiency data for nine electricity-intensive categories of electrical and electronic appliances (including air conditioners, lighting, refrigerators, televisions, water heaters, laptops, printers, game consoles, and rice cookers).
With the help of this Guide, every one can easily choose the most efficient appliances and see what else they can do in their everyday life to save energy, money and, more importantly, the environment.
As more consumers are actively looking for climate friendly products, WWF hopes that manufacturers will move towards introducing more energy-efficient products to meet the market demand.
