Not all of us have the luxury of having mum's delicious home cooked food. Other than dining out, takeaway meals are an essential part of Hong Kong's food cycle, since kitchens are so tiny and everyone's so busy. Polystyrene foam, which most of our takeaway containers are made of, is actually fully recyclable, but it is generally very expensive to recycle and in Hong Kong there is a lack of such recycling facilities and means. 70% of the 100 tonnes of polystyrene waste ended up in our landfills every day come from food and drink containers. In fact, polystyrene foam have been banned in many cities around the world simply because it is so bad for the environment! Keep a lunchbox at school or work if you usually get takeaway from your canteen.
