A Day In the Low-C Life of Chi Chung's Family !

4:00pm - BB's tea time: organic cookies, yogurt and fruit

Yvonne shares with us her homemade
organic orange cake. Yummy!

The Wong Family fly to Hawaii to visit
their folks with their flight carbon fully
offset. Aloha!

Yvonne loves taking Kalani for a stroll in a park, but both parents feel the heavily polluted air often can actually make outdoor activities unhealthy. “We have some great clear days, but on the whole picture in Hong Kong, we are still in a very bad position. Every time we come back from Hawaii, it's the air and weather we miss the most...”

In most countries, outdoor activities are encouraged as part of a healthy lifestyle. The fact that our air quality is constantly at a bad level, with warnings from the Hong Kong Lung Foundation for people to cut down on outdoor activities, it's a sure sign that we in Hong Kong seriously need to pick up pace on our Low-C lifestyle.

As it turns out, people escaping Hong Kong's smoggy air could be seriously contributing to global warming. Flying produces a whopping amount of CO2; for instance a return trip between Hong Kong and L.A. would produce almost 7 tonnes of CO2 per person! “It's unfortunate that our technology doesn't allow flying to be less polluting yet, but I have faith!” says Chi Chung. “In the mean time, we've been trying to balance our contribution out with carbon offsetting programs.”

Indeed, the number of carbs piled on from flying is scary. If trains are not an option and you really need to fly, perhaps you could offset your carbs by contributing to emission lowering projects. WWF encourages offsetting the amount you can't cut with internationally recognised offsetting companies like ClimateFriendly.

Talk CO2...

Offsetting flights can be tricky. If you try out offsetting programmes offered by airlines in conjunction with the flights, you may find that the results vary quite a lot. For instance, a round trip between Hong Kong and London in what was Oasis Airline's carbon offsetting schemes amounts to 5.7 tonnes of CO2 emitted per passenger. The same flight is said to only emit 1.62 tonnes according to Cathay Pacific. We recommend buying “carbon credits” that will contribute to projects that lower greenhouse gas emissions from independent offset sellers.
