Chi Chung drives a Toyota Prius to town from their home in Tung Chung. "This has been our hybrid car since 2004 - it's a great car that saves on at least 80% bad gas emission with great fuel-economy" he excitedly exclaims. Every litre of petrol used gives out almost 3kg of CO2. Hybrids run on a combination of electricity and petrol, and have special features that help save on energy consumption while reducing harmful emissions. For example, regenerative braking converts the kinetic energy of braking into electricity that will help power devices like air-conditioning. It helps save on petrol and the wallet- especially since fuel prices have just been skyrocketing.
Last year the government offered a 30 percent registration tax reduction as an incentive for people to buy eco-friendly private cars, which can save the buyer up to $50,000, but Chi Chung sighs that the government just hasn't done enough to promote it. "We don't see many AM cars thatare hybrids-if the government really realized how important taking every step to save the environment was, they would lead by example." He's actually tried to convince his local celebrity friends too, but says many just aren't keen. "They want fancy over green, it seems." In other parts of the world, however, hybrids have become quite fancy. It has almost become a status symbol to be eco-friendly in Hollywood, as though driving an oversized engine is seen to be unfashionable.
