A Day In the Low-C Life of Chi Chung's Family !

10:30am - Grocery Shopping

"We usually bring our own bags," says Yvonne, "always forget to bring our own ice pack though..." Indeed, as much as we seem to hear it about bringing your bag all the time, plastic bags are still one of our city's worst anti-environment habits. Hong Kong has been found to use a shocking 23 million plastic bags filling up our landfills every day.

Even the motherland has recognized this "white pollution": starting from June, free plastic bags will be banned, as is the making and using of ultra-thin plastic bags. Aware that this is a major long-term issue, mainland authorities are encouraging people to bring cloth bags for normal groceries and baskets for vegetables.

Talk CO2...

  • For every 10 plastic bag you don't take:
    Cut 1kg CO2
  • Buy local, seasonal produce. If only imported ones are available, pick the closer ones.Bananas from South America have to travel much further to get here than ones from the Philippines.
    Cut 2kg CO2
  • Eat less meat. The meat industry is said to produce 18% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions; so for both your own health and the planet's health, eat a little less meat, or try replacing meat with soy proteins once a week.
Cut 50 kg CO2 per meatless meal
Every year 2000 to 3500 people in Hong Kong die prematurely due to Air Pollution
